Anna Onichimowska, born in Warsaw in 1952, is the author of over thirty books
for children and teenagers. A graduate in Polish literature, she worked as an
editor for a number of years. Her first collection of verse, Gdybym miał konia
(If I Had a Horse), was published in 1980. To date she has written nearly thirty
audio theatre scripts, five plays for the theatre and television, and edited several
anthologies of children’s stories. Her work has won many literary prizes in Poland
and abroad, and has been translated and published abroad. Anna Onichimowska
was Director of the Polish Section of IBBY from 1995 to 2003.
She loves writing for children and enjoys meeting her readers. She keeps
saying that she does write for children, but she always thinks of the parents
who will read her stories aloud too. She worked with her friend Tom Paxal from
Finland: together they invented the plot in English and then write stories in their
native languages, Anna in Polish and Tom in Swedish.
Recently Anna wrote two film scripts based on her books and these films will
be produced this year
